Rocinante's black feather coat was getting wet. Beneath him, the snow was mixing with his blood as it melted from what little warmth he had left.
He had at least a couple of broken ribs, and burning twinges of pain from the bullets still in his body assailed him when he tried to get up; he would have probably screamed if one of them had not pierced his lungs, making even breathing close to impossible.

His head was spinning, his limbs were going numb, and the metallic taste of his own blood was sickening, but he kept fighting. He couldn't die, yet... He could give up, or Law's voice—Law's cries would be heard throughout the whole island.

Please, Law, run!

Rocinante coughed, almost chocking as a gush of blood filled his month. The warm liquid trickled down his chin, his heartbeat becoming fainter and his breath more laboured with each passing second. Things weren't looking good for him, but even in that situation his last thoughts were for the child he'd managed to save from his brother.

Run away, Law, quietly and unnoticed... Now, nobody can stop you! You are... finally... free...

Rocinante's mute prayer was received by the silent falling snow that slowly covered his face, and his feeble smile was the last thing to disappear under the white shroud.

---

Law wandered aimlessly across the snowy hills, trembling and bawling his heart out, but no noise came from his small figure. Tears ran down his white-patched face and mixed with snot. He felt cold. He was afraid. He was alone... and he dreaded the moment his voice wouldn't be silent anymore.
The child knew that the return of sound would coincide with the death of Corazon, whose powers had allowed him to slip away from the Donquixote Pirates.

Suddenly, Law's shouting burst through the snowstorm. However, his wails could be heard for just the fraction of a second, immediately drowned by the roar of a cannonade from the Marine ship anchored in the bay. The deafening blast knocked Laws' breath out and sent him a good five meters away, but he still had the presence of mind to grab his hat and pull it down over his ears.

When the gunfire finally ceased, Law crawled towards the nearest building—or better, the forsaken skeleton of what had once been a house. He crouched behind a scraped brick wall and remained there for a long time, shaking. His throat was hurting so much he could hardly speak at all, but he kept whispering his benefactor's name until dawn. Then, exhausted, the child finally drifted into a dreamless sleep.
Law was curled up in Corazon's last present for him: a plain yet warm blanket, which prevented him from dying from hypothermia.

---

Sengoku was eating rice crackers when the news reached him. The snack fell from his hand as he yelled through the den-den mushi, "Is he alive?!"

"Barely." Vice-admiral Tsuru's voice sounded heavy even through the receiver.

Realising that he had been holding his breath, Sengoku sighed. "Do everything in your power to save him," he replied. "Then, we'll proceed with the interrogation." He had added the last bit after the slightest of pauses, trying to regain composure even though he was raging. Please, don't die, he thought, recalling his first encounter with Rocinante: a crying mess with blong hair covering half his face bumping against his legs. Eighteen years had passed since Sengoku met that scared little child, and Rocinante had become like a son to him.

Sengoku stood up and looked out of the window; outside, the sky was grey and rain from thick cumulonimbi would soon whip fiercely against the walls of the Marine headquarters. For once, he wished for Garp to storm into his office as he usually did, without even bothering to knock on the door first. But then, he remembered that his friend's most recent visit coincided with the last time he had talked with Rocinante.
Sengoku's eyes watered up and he murmured to himself, "Why did I allow you to accept such a dangerous mission in the first place? I should have known better!"

Soon though, the rumbles of the thunderstorm outside rouse him from his trance. Sengoku dried his tears: an admiral couldn't display weakness before his subordinates, especially in difficult times.

---

In the end, their efforts were useless: no matter how much they tried to protest, the traitor would be sent to Impel Down for the crime of stealing the Ope Ope no Mi.

That was the most sought-after Devil's Fruit in the world, and thus the commander's actions were considered treason. Even if Rocinante had explained to them Law's story—the kid needed the fruit to cure his disease—their superiors weren't the kind of people who cared for the survival of a mere child: all they were concerned about was the immortality-giving powers of the Ope Ope no Mi.
And that wasn't even the worst of it. After those facts, nobody in the Marine other than Sengoku and his closest friends trusted Rocinante anymore, and didn't believe his words even when he told them that Dressrosa was in danger. That meant that not only Rocinante, but also that peaceful kingdom was doomed: Rocinante's older brother, Donquixote Doflamingo, would soon put in motion his diabolical plan to conquer back the country that had once been their family's, and nobody could do something to prevent it.

"Why can't those idiots listen for once?!" Garp barked while slamming his fist on the desk before him. Sengoku's cup toppled and the spilled tea soaked the documents scattered on the wooden surface.

"Calm down," hissed the admiral, frowning. "Rocinante is lucky to still be alive. We should be grateful for that, at least."

However, Garp wasn't of the same opinion. "Bollocks!" he yelled. "You know very well that being sent to Impel Down is worse than death itself!"

Anger looked so out of place on Garp's face... Sengoku had grown used to the vice admiral's annoyingly jovial attitude, and that change in the other's mood irritated him. At the same time though, he wished he could express his concern for Rocinante as openly as the man in front of him. "I can't do anything more for Rocinante, I'm sorry," he whispered after a moment of silence. "Sakazuki is behind this decision, and the World Government hangs on his lips... You'll be able to bring rice crackers to him even in prison, at least."

Sengoku had tried to lighten the mood, but he had failed miserably. Still furious, Garp left the room slamming the door behind him. The admiral flinched. Then, he sighed and covered his eyes with his hand.

---

Eleven years had passed since he had been confined in Impel Down, and Rocinante couldn't believe what was happening before his own eyes. Nobody had ever escaped from that prison—no wait, it did happen once... but a second time too?

This is absurd!

Those infamous "D" people feared by his brother really did bring storms to the world. Rocinante found it ironic that, while in the past he had given everything up for a "D", now another "D" was giving him a second chance.

Thank you, Monkey D. Luffy... One day, I would like to meet you and repay my debt.

Rocinante jumped to his feet, and before he was aware of it his legs—a bit rusty but still strong—started moving by themselves. He ran and ran, climbing up stairs and fighting monstrous guardians. Sure, he did stumble here and there, since he was out of shape and as clumsy as ever, but he kept going and only stopped when he emerged from the underwater prison.
There, a cool wind welcomed him: it smelled of sea and freedom, and for the first time in years Rocinante had the certainty that he would see Law again. Tears of joy filled his eyes, but he didn't let them cloud his vision. He leaped aboard the nearest ship, being careful not to make mistakes. He needed to blend with the rest of the fugitives and act fast before the Gate of Justice closed, otherwise he wouldn't be able to really leave that hellish place behind.

Rocinante's silence had lasted way too long: now, it was time to step on the stage of the world again.
MY ONE PIECE LITERATURE DEVIATIONS (more here):
Silent Act (One Piece, Rocinante poem)Exiled from the sky where fake gods reside,
I played the part of the quiet, smaller child.
With my elder brother I struggled to survive:
we hid from people, nearly starved to death,
and when mother died I silently wept.
Then two years later my silence broke:
I also lost father, killed by my own blood.
I screamed in despair and then ran away,
was found by a man to whom I'm indebted.
I became a marine, as a pirate disguised,
to my brother I returned, there were wine ‘n smiles.
I was welcomed back, no questions were asked,
and in the spider's nest I acted quietly,
whilst my brother's shadow becoming
to stop the madness of my own blood
—because I too was a fallen dragoon,
but my own feathers were made of ash
instead of brother's glossy pink glass.
For a while I observed my brother's life:
he had a new family he seemed to like
and that made me recall that forgotten time
when we were a family albeit living in grime.
However back then I missed to see
what'd really ha
Shades of Memories (OP CoraLaw fanfic, revised)
Memories can be linked to an image, or to a particular sound, or even to a taste or a smell that people associate with something they experienced in the past.
Sometimes these memories can be good, sometimes they can be bad; some other times, they can be… unexpected. For instance, who would associate the smell of burnt bread with war and destruction? Certainly not the so-called “normal people”, but I forgot how to be one long ago.
That said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that my memories of you are linked to a particular shade of red: most people would just call it "pink", but I don’t like pink.
No, your colour is a unique, unnamed shade that belongs to you and you alone: the shade of precious blood mixing with pure, just-fallen snow. And when I least expected it, I stumbled upon this caducous colour again…

Shades of Memories

After the Fall (post-Dressrosa One Piece fanfic)Law woke up to a dull pain on his right shoulder. Suppressing a groan, he clasped it with his left hand and opened his eyes.
His head was still resting on the scabbard of his longsword as when he had fallen asleep, but thanks to his padded hat it didn't hurt.
Without moving, he looked around through half-lidded eyes. In the dim light, he recognised the small mill where they had been brought to hide from the marines.
Luffy was still sleeping; his crewmates were sprawled on the floor around his bed, and only Nico Robin was gracefully resting on a chair near the table. Their back against the wooden wall, Kyros and that idiot of Bellamy were snoring, too.
"Ouch!" Law hissed between his teeth as another burning pang assailed him, shooting through his right arm this time. The fact that he could feel it was a good sign, but he wondered if the powers of that dwarf, Manshelly, were enough for it to completely heal.
Maybe, I need antibiotics... He felt a bit feverish, but that wasn't what
Awakening (post-Dressrosa One Piece AT, revised)Sengoku?! Law winced.
That was the name of the former Fleet Admiral: the person his benefactor had worked for before being killed to save him, many years ago...
"Let's move! Those bloody marines have started searching for you!"
After pondering it for a moment, Law decided to follow Bartolomeo and the others.
Not a Shichibukai anymore, he was a wanted man again and could be arrested, so he scrapped the idea of searching the old marine even if there were a few questions he wanted to ask him.
"I just remembered I need to do something, go ahead without me!"
Law stopped in his tracks. He should have imagined it; when Luffy was involved, things never went as planned.
What do you have in mind, Mugiwara-ya? If the other captain intended to delay their escape, he would have enough time to meet Corazon's superior–it would be risky, but was worth a try. "I'll come with you!" he called after Luffy.
    The
Behind the Mask (post-Dressrosa One Piece AT fic)Rocinante didn't want to see him. Not after what he'd done to the people of Dressrosa—and especially not after what he'd done to Law.
Yet, it was his duty to take him into custody. That was an obligation he had put upon himself to begin with, so he couldn't really complain.
Now, it was time to even the score with the one whom he had once called brother.

First Act
The tall man's hands trembled slightly as he took off his large burgundy mask; it was decorated with a faux beard and long black feathers, and a frowning face appeared from behind it. A blue four-pointed mark was tattooed under the right eye of the man, and dark red lipstick painted a fake smile on his features.
Once a marine—and now a member of Cipher Pol Aigis Zero—the blond agent's name was Donquixote Rocinante, and he was the younger brother of the infamous Heavenly Yaksha.
After slackening his black tie a little, the CP-0 agent took a deep breath and looked at his feet.
SMILE (One Piece, Dressrosa main flashback AT fic)They had been travelling for nearly six months, and up to that morning the search of the Ope Ope no Mi had been unsuccessful. Rocinante had never given up, though, and his perseverance was finally rewarded when he learnt that a bunch of pirates had gained possession of the fruit. Stealing it from them had been a piece of cake for someone with his powers, and despite a daring escape and a couple of bullets still in his body everything had gone according to plans... Until Vergo found out the truth about him, at least.
Now, they were running away from Doflamingo's right-hand man, but Rocinante was too happy for Law to worry about himself. That longed-for Devil's Fruit would give the boy the powers to heal his otherwise incurable Amber Lead poisoning, and that was what really mattered.
Law had grown a little within the last few months, yet Rocinante—or Corazon, as he was called by the Donquixote Pirates—was still a giant compared to him. And a klutz, Law was reminded whe

UPDATE: another contribution of mine for the Corazon Week event on Tumblr... This wasn't especially made for that, but I never shared outside of DA and it fits the DAY 2 (July 10) theme, "Marine Commander Rocinante", quite well.  ^^
Tumblr post.

For this fanfic to be readable outside of DA too I had to turn the mature content warning off, anyway I wasn't sure it needed it to begin with since it just has a couple of swearing words and a bit of moderate violence in the first few paragraphs. I originally wrote this short story just after reading chapter 767 of One Piece, but I kept refining it until today. As for the previous fanfic that I uploaded a few days ago, this one too is only partially canon. That said, it still contains some spoilers for the Dressrosa arc, so read it at your own risk!
I hope you'll like it, and if there's something to fix please let me know (I already updated it twice after rewording several sentences, if my watchers are wondering why they received this deviation in their inbox again). Comments in general are really appreciated, since I love discussing about my OP headcanons with other fans!  :)

A/N:
- this short story is mostly a collection of vignettes, but I wrote more extensively about the dynamics between Law, Corazon, and Doflamingo in my previous fic, "SMILE" (it also has more info about the Ope Ope no Mi and other Devil's Fruits);
- for non OP fans (and simplifying a little), "Corazon" is the code name Rocinante used when he infiltrated the Donquixote Pirates, which were led by his elder brother;
- the "den-den mushi" are the phones (but also cameras and many other things) of the One Piece world (they are living snails with mechanical parts mounted on their shell);
- among the Navy officers, Sakazuki's views are probably the closest to the World Government's—hence that bit of conversation between Sengoku and Garp;
- for OP fans, I didn't include Sengoku's little goat in the story to avoid confusing non-OP readers;
- sorry for trolling you with the last line of my story, which implies that my theory about Corazon is canon, but I couldn't resist.  :P   *the denial is strong with this one (semi-cit.)*
