[Death Note] Alternate Note - Chapter 4|COMMISSION

"Alternate Note" is a Death Note fanfiction commissioned to me by CatHelsing, who also created the fan-character protagonist of this story, Miu Sasaki, and a few more FCs who appear or are mentioned in the fanfic.

About canon characters, this fanfiction focuses around Beyond Birthday, the main antagonist of this story. Light and of course L play a big role, too, and other boys from Wammy's House will also make their appearance (with Matt having a bit more space than the others--I know he is a fan favourite, so I hope I wrote him in character ^^ ).
Expect A’s sad backstory, the inevitable Light/Kira - L/Ryuzaki dichotomy, Ryuk's pungent cynicism, some fluffy moments and lots of craziness... I had fun writing BB, but he also scares me.

A/N:
This fic is based on the DN manga chronology and starts in January 2004 of the official timeline. However, the timeline will diverge from the canonical one from that point on since this is an AT (alternate timeline) fanfic. That said, please notice that Light will still join the Task Force only in April of the same year, as in the canon story. Furthermore, this fic implies that it will not be Mello to write the "Another Note" novel but Miu Sasaki, the fan-character protagonist of this story. Finally, Misa (and her shinigami) won't appear at all.
I felt like including honorifics as in the Japanese language in this fic. I tried not to abuse them, but I added them since I think they could add interesting undertones to the relationship between the characters. I know English would not normally use them, but I wanted to take some liberties since this is a fanfic based on a Japanese novel/manga.
While Beyond Birthday also imitates L's pattern of speech in the "Another Note" novel, this fic takes place after the events narrated in the novel (prologue aside), when BB presumably slipped even deeper into madness. Hence, I made him speak less formal than in canon.
Shinigami's eyes are described differently in the DN manga, anime and movies, so I went with the version I found more appealing. Furthermore, while in canon normal people cannot distinguish shinigami's eyes from human eyes, in this fic they can; shinigami’s eyes look reddish and, in general, have a sinister and otherworldly look.
Unlike in canon, BB does not learn about the truth about the floating numbers he sees above people's heads until later, after A's suicide (in the "Another Note" novels, it is implied that he knew even before he was taken in Wammy's House). I changed this detail about his background to adapt it to the structure and themes of this fic.
While Matsuda's first name is "Tota", I only mentioned it once in the fic and I used his surname instead, since that is the name most DN fans are familiar with. Moreover, the main point of view used in the fanfic is Miu's and she would call him by his surname anyway (plus the -san honorific).



P.S. While working on this commission I realized how much I miss L as a character... I should draw him more.
